Community Diversity and Ecosystem Functioning Department "DCFE" - iEES Paris

The DCFE Department brings together 4 teams whose competences make it possible to structure research based on conceptual and methodological exchanges on the theme of the interrelations between biodiversity – structure – functioning of ecosystems and their dynamics.
These exchanges are the result of a common reflection based on a scientific animation as well as a pooling of equipment and technical platforms, both intended as transversal between the teams of the Department.

Research within the Department is conducted at multiple levels of integration : from cells to ecosystems, from environmental constraints to ecological and evolutionary dynamics. A particular effort focuses on the platforms for modelling and simulation, for physicochemical analysis of nutrient stocks and flows (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus …) and for microbiology.


The DCFE Department proposes to bring out several lines of research by aggregating the competences peculiar to the teams :

  • Link the functioning of interaction networks, the microbial loop and related ecological functions (e.g. primary production, mineralization, nitrification) ;
  • Compare very different ecosystems (aquatic vs. terrestrial ecosystems, natural vs. anthropogenic ecosystems (e.g. urban, agrosystems)) ;
  • Analyze the impact of natural and anthropic disturbances on ecological interaction networks and extract indicators of stability (resistance, resilience) ;
  • Understand the role of the spatial organization of populations in the functioning of networks and ecosystems at fine scales (microbial populations), intermediate scales (plots, lakes, mesocosms) and wide scales (landscape, watersheds) ;
  • Cross social demands and ecosystem functioning by translating these concepts in terms of ecosystem services.

Analyze the interactions between biodiversity, community dynamics, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem services.
