The main objective of the FEST team is to better understand the interactions between biological actors and the abiotic properties of soils, and the impact of these interactions on the resulting ecosystem services.
In particular, we study the influence of soil engineers (especially earthworms, termites and microbial activity) and their “productions” (biostructures, biopores but also composts and vermicomposts as organic amendments used in the management of agricultural soils ) on the dynamics of abiotic properties of soils and the following essential ecosystem outputs: carbon and water storage and dynamics, plant growth and detachment (erosion) of soils.
For this, our studies are conducted along a pedoclimatic gradient from regions with high annual water deficit to regions with high water excess, relying on the different projects of the UMR iEES Paris (Brazil, Chile, France) and on the nationial and international observatories in Tunisia, India, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam (M-Tropics network) and in Cambodia (Chrey Back Observatory).
The activities of the FEST team meet the needs of societies to better preserve their environment, to manage their natural resources in a sustainable manner, and to define sustainable farming practices in productive ecosystems
(in accordance with Objectives 2 “Food security”, 15 “Land life”, 13 “Fight against climate change” and 6 “Clean water and sanitation” of Sustainable Development (SDG), and within the framework of the international initiative 4p1000).
As part of Doctoral School 129 “Environmental Sciences”, the members of the FEST team are involved in different training:
In France, by hosting Master 1 and 2 trainees and teaching at Sorbonne University (Master SDUEE), at Paris-Saclay University (Masters GSSE and CLUES), at UPEC (Master STAAE – IBE), and at the François Rabelais University in Tours (Master STS).
Abroad, through student training and teaching at the University of Science and Technology in Hanoi (USTH), within the Faculty of Agriculture of the National University of Laos (NUOL) ) and the University of Khon Kaen (KKU) in Thailand, as well as within the framework of the International North-South Master in Soil Sciences.
