As primary producers, plants are essential to the functioning of ecosystems for which they provide many vital ecosystem services such as the production of organic carbon, dioxygen, while contributing to soil improvement …
However, plants are sessile organisms that cannot escape the constraints imposed by their environment. Consequently, the ability of plants to respond to these constraints fundamentally determines 1) the services provided by vegetation (primary production, biomass, air quality, etc.), 2) their distribution within ecosystems at scale. local, continental or global.
The research carried out in the Plant-Environment Interactions department focuses on physiological mechanisms (at the individual, population or community level) that plants implement in response to constraints of an abiotic nature ( drought, salinity, heavy metals …) and / or biotic (pathogens, soil engineers).
Goals
The two teams from the IPE department are interested in the responses of plants to environmental constraints with a view to:
characterize the tolerance mechanisms of plants to environmental constraints,
assess the relative importance of pathways of plant metabolism (nitrogen metabolism, photosynthesis, etc.) in biogeochemical cycles,
develop tolerance / sensitivity biomarkers, corresponding to different levels of integration of the plant’s physiology (photosynthesis, respiration, etc.),
develop bioremediation (phytoremediation) strategies for soil detoxification,
develop environmental biomonitoring systems through plants.
Structuring of the department
The department brings together two research teams, APCE and EcoPhyS, made up of teacher-researchers and researchers specializing in the field of plant physiology: the PACE team is located on the Jussieu site (Paris 5th) and the EcoPhyS team is located on the UPEC site (94-Créteil).
