Neurophysiologiste des insectes, ma recherche porte sur l’étude des mécanismes de l’olfaction chez les insectes phytophages et chez la drosophile. Comment un insecte analyse les propriétés de signaux olfactifs pour y répondre par un comportement adapté ? Comprendre le codage olfactif, c’est appréhender les mécanismes de la représentation des caractéristiques du signal olfactif par les neurones olfactifs. Ma démarche scientifique est de comprendre les mécanismes cellulaires et moléculaires de ce codage et de sa plasticité au niveau périphérique (détection antennaire) et central (intégration cérébrale).
La compréhension des capacités de codage du système olfactif des insectes est indispensable à l’élucidation de leur(s) stratégie(s) d’orientation. Les performances des insectes à localiser des sources d’odeur reposent sur un système olfactif sensible, sélectif et rapide mais aussi sur des capacités encore mal comprises de traitement d’une information particulièrement complexe. Le comportement d’orientation de l’insecte en vol étant guidé par la dynamique des détections d’odeurs, ma recherche porte en particulier sur l’analyse de la dynamique de leurs réponses olfactives.
Ces travaux trouvent des applications dans deux domaines :
- Le biocontrôle pour lequel les odeurs peuvent être utilisées pour surveiller ou réduire les populations d’insectes ravageurs, limitant ainsi le recours aux insecticides
- L’olfaction artificielle où la compréhension des mécanismes d’orientation olfactive chez les insectes aide à la mise au point de solutions biomimétiques de localisation de sources d’odeur.
I am a neurophysiologist of insects. My research focuses on the mechanisms of olfaction in phytophagous insects and in Drosophila. I study how insects encode the properties of olfactory signals when tracking odor plumes. Deciphering olfactory coding means understanding the mechanisms of the representation of the characteristics of the olfactory signal by olfactory neurons. I analyze the cellular and molecular mechanisms of this coding and its plasticity at the peripheral and central levels. How the properties of odor cues are transduced by olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) and how the signal delivered by ORNs is processed in the insect brain to elicit olfactory behaviors.
Understanding the coding capabilities of the olfactory system of insects is essential to elucidate their orientation strategies. The performance of insects in locating odor sources is based on a sensitive, selective and rapid olfactory system, but also on still poorly understood capacities for processing particularly complex information. As the orientation behavior of the insect in flight is guided by the dynamics of odor detection, I am particularly interested in the analysis of the dynamics of their olfactory responses.
These studies find applications in two fields:
- Biocontrol for which odors can be used to monitor or reduce the populations of insect pests, thus limiting the use of insecticides
- Artificial olfaction where understanding the mechanisms of olfactory orientation in insects could help in the development of biomimetic solutions for locating odor sources. I combine my knowledge in insect olfaction and electrophysiology to use insect antennae as odor detectors.
