Team Phenotypic variability and adaptation "VPA" - iEES Paris

Our research aims to understand the ecological and evolutionary causes of phenotypic variability.

We investigate the consequences of this variability for demographic processes which depend on environmental conditions.

We use different research models to address major topics (the common lizard, annual killifish, springtails), in the lab, in mesocosms and in the field.

We support a predictive ecology and therefore develop qualitative and quantitative models linked to the many empirical models we study.

Major research topics

Mechanisms × Environments

We are interested in traits that are plastic within a lifetime, such as body size, fecundity and mortality rates. These are often strongly dependent on the environment.

Genetic × non-genetic heritability

Every individual’s history can leave a trace in the genome, the epigenome and many phenotypic traits and this by means of interacting mechanisms. Natural selection can favour the use of these lagged effects as information to prepare individuals for coming environmental conditions.

Adaptation and rapid evolution

The conceptual framework to predict the fate of natural populations during climate change struggles with concepts such as (1) adaptation (2) adapted state and (3) adaptational lag .during climate change. We model and aim to estimate these lags.
